Assistant Manager – Windy Station

Romani Pastoral Company are looking for an experienced Assistant Manager for their mixed farming operation Windy Station, located near Quirindi in northern New South Wales. The property consists of 21,000 hectares and is currently running approximately 3,000 breeding cows and an annual program of 10,000 hectares of winter and summer dryland cropping.

Reporting through to the property General Manager, the Assistant Manager will be suitably skilled to oversee the day to day operations of the farm as a key member of the management team. They will be an important driver of the cultural, strategic and operational direction of the business. We are looking for applicants with the necessary skills and the desire to be part of a developing business and seeking the opportunity to excel and further develop their careers.

Windy Station is in a stage of growth and development and requires a suitably skilled, driven, ambitious, team player to assist in this progress. Suitable candidates will need to be organised, have strong communication skills and present a high level of detail. This position will allow for future personal and career growth and this will be encourage through a mix of on and off-farm training and development.

The suitable candidate will require leadership and staff development skills as they will be responsible for overseeing a large number of staff on a daily basis including an overseer, on-farm mechanic, up to seven station hands as well as any casual employees. They will also oversee contract cropping operators and their staff on a seasonal basis. Excellent communication skills are essential.

The applicant must be familiar with the financial aspects of running a large scale agricultural business and formal training in this area is highly desirable. The Assistant Manager will provide input into annual financial and production budgets and will be responsible for the day to day implementation and adherence to these plans.

Technology is a key component of the operation of the business and a working knowledge of programs such as Excel and other financial, production and planning tools is required. There will be an element of record keeping that will need to be completed. e.g., stock movements, chemical use and production data etc.

The role is strongly focused on the beef herd operations and candidates must be experienced in all aspects of beef cattle husbandry and have strong pasture management skills. They must have good working cattle dogs and the ability to muster using motorbikes and side-by-side vehicles. Applicants will need a thorough understanding of broad acre summer and winter crop production in the northern NSW production zone and machinery and mechanical experience is desirable.

The company aims to be an integral participant in the local community and the Assistant Manager will be a crucial part of continuing to foster and develop this through local community support and involvement.

The successful applicant will require:

  • Strong leadership and people management skills,
  • Well-developed communication skills,
  • Extensive experience in performing and overseeing all aspects of large scale beef cattle production including pasture management,
  • Understanding of summer and winter dryland crop production in northern NSW,
  • Excellent organisational skills with the proven ability to execute and follow plans however be flexible enough in your approach to adjust as required,
  • Attention to detail in all aspects of operations,
  • Accurate record keeping and the ability to utilise technology,
  • Strong ability to work efficiently as a team or independently,
  • Formal Agricultural qualifications are desirable,
  • Chemical accreditation and application experience desired,
  • Drivers licence essential – HR licence an advantage,
  • Adhere to and cultivate an environment based on safe working practices and OH&S regulations,
  • A mentality of ownership, general interest in the company and industry development.

This position provides the candidate with the opportunity to be involved in the development and growth of a dynamic farming operation. This position would suit a family with the option of several local schools and access to a school bus.
